Botanical research work in the then Madras State was started as right on time as 1898 with the arrangement of a different Economic Botanist for Sugarcane. By 1907, Agricultural College and Research Institute was begun at Coimbatore for bestowing Agricultural Education other than leading examination and expansion.

For giving careful consideration to the examination of different products, isolate reproducing stations were begun for Paddy (1912), Cotton (1922), Millets (1923), Oilseeds (1930), Pulses (1943) and Forages (1976) under the initiative of harvest experts for every which were then brought under the Department of Agricultural Botany in 1971 after the foundation of TNAU in June 1971. Perceiving the significance of harvest rearing, the Department of Agricultural Botany was redesigned into a Directorate and assigned as "School of Genetics" from 1.3.1980. Later amid 1997, the Directorate was re assigned as "Community for Plant Breeding and Genetics".

Notwithstanding the current six divisions, a different Department for Plant Genetic Resources has been built up on 01.08.2009. The Breeder Seed unit has been incorporated into this Directorate from 01.08.2013. Administration of TamilNadu authorized a Center of Excellence in Molecular Breeding (CMB) according to the TN Govt G.O. Ms. No.92, Agriculture (AU) Department dated 07.04.2015.
