Can you tell me about Formula SAE of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras which is organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers?

Formula SAE is organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers at various locations around the world annually. It is one of the most respected student design events where student’s mange an entire project, right from design, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, finance & logistics.

Team Raftar, the official formula student team of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras first participated in 2012, at the prestigious Silverstone circuit, UK. The team was highly appreciated for its prowess in design.

The team showed RFR-12A, the very first car from IITM, which was the least expensive car in the history of Formula Student. The team scored competitively in the costing and business events.

RFR-12A reached speeds of 150 KMPH exhibiting brilliant handling & stability. With better funding and car-loads of experience, the future seems to be a lot more promising with respect to performance.

Specializations involved:
• Design (Suspensions, Chassis, steering, wheel hubs, Brakes, cockpit, etc.
• Analysis (Full vehicle performance simulation, Chassis rigidity, CFD analysis for intake systems, resonance tuning for exhaust systems)
• Manufacturing
• Implementation (Used a Honda CBR 600 cc RR Engine. Tuned a custom ECU for the engine)
