Standard Chartered has operated in Africa for over 150 years and the region remains a core part of the Bank’s Group Strategic Intent. Standard Chartered Bank has over 180 branches in 15 African countries and over 8,000 staff. Standard Chartered Africa is a highly respected, well established “household name”, with deep-rooted local knowledge and experience.

Growth

Gross national income (GNI) per capita in 2012 was $1,345. 60% of Africans live in low-income countries, which on average will need 25 years to reach lower middle income status at current growth rates

Employment
Labour force growth in 2011 was 3.1%. Over 10 million jobs need to
be added annually in order to absorb this growing labour force.
Infrastructure
An estimated $100 billion per year of investment is needed to fill Africa’s
pressing infrastructure needs, mainly in power, water supply and transportation.
