Project Details

Associação dos Agricultores Agroflorestais de Barra do Turvo e Adrianópolis (COOPERAFLORESTA) will expand its agroforestry school to offer its member-farmers training and the opportunity to share experiences with technicians, researchers and other interested farmers. It will begin operating its new plant processing fruit pulp, ice cream and dried fruit. The project is expected to benefit at least 2,000 Brazilians directly and another 11,000 indirectly.

Instituto Comunitario Grande Florianopolis (ICom) will further develop its Centro de Apoio a Iniciativas Sociais (CAIS), a resource center for nongovernmental and grassroots groups in Greater Florianopolis, which should benefit 400 organizations and 1000 individuals.

Instituto Fazer Acontecer (IFA) (the Make it Happen Institute), which uses sports to spur community development, will organize training for sports educators, educational sports activities for young Brazilians in rural Bahia and forums on sports in education and the social impact of the World Cup and Olympics. The activities will benefit 1,610 people from Bahia directly and approximately 10,000 indirectly.

Centro de Tecnologias Alternativas Populares (CETAP) will promote the expansion of agro-ecological farming systems with family farmers and improve the distribution and marketing of organic products in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul. CETAP will facilitate the connection between these family farmers and low-income urban groups interested in processing the organic produce into value-added products for local markets. These activities will generate employment and income for family farmers, and low-income urban groups.

Associação de Cooperação Técnica para o Desenvolvimento Humano – Outro Olhar (OUTRO OLHAR) will work with the Popyguá Solidarity Network, composed of representatives of indigenous Guarani communities in the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná, to develop microenterprises, improve infrastructure, record oral history, preserve the environment and reduce dependency on government assistance. Some 300 individuals will benefit directly.

Associação dos Remanescentes do Quilombo de Pombal (ARQP) will work with 160 Afro-Brazilian farmers resettled through Brazil’s program of land reform in São Tiago in the municipality of Santa Rita do Novo Destino, state of Goiás, to develop the association’s fund for equipment to improve production, and to launch a cooperative that buys the community’s produce to sell in volume. Instituto Brasil Central (IBRACE) will train farmers, residents of quilombola and indigenous Brazilians resettled as a result of land reform in the northeastern region of the state of Goiás to monitor and contribute to the discussion of public policies and programs on sustainable development, biodiversity and social services. One hundred individuals should benefit directly and 80,000 indirectly.

A Casa Verde Cultura e Meio Ambiente (Casa Verde) will work with indigenous, quilombola communities, and small farmers resettled by Brazil’s program of land reform, to improve their productive capacities, reinforce their traditional practices, and conserve biodiversity in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul. This project will directly benefit 1,000 families and indirectly another 3,500 families.

Instituto Arcor Brasil (IAB) will provide resources to grassroots groups for undertaking development projects. IAB will also work with Brazilian corporations and corporate foundations in RedEAmérica to improve the effectiveness of their social investment practices.

Instituto Pró Educação e Saúde (Instituto Proeza) will work on the outskirts of Brasilia to train victim victims of domestic violence in vocational skills which help income generation, gender equality in labor relations, and establishing their own association to leverage business opportunities related to the 2014 World Cup and beyond. Counterpart funds are used to promote after school classes and tutoring for children at risk. Approximately 100 women and 200 children benefit directly and 1,500 indirectly. Video

Centro de Educação Popular (CENEP) will research medicinal plants indigenous to the Curimataú territory in the Brazilian Northeast and work with communities to expand on practices that use them effectively in health care and conservation. The project is expected to benefit 350 residents of 10 municipalities in the state of Paraíba directly and another 2,500 indirectly.

Alternativas para Pequena Agricultura no Tocantins (APA-TO) will introduce new technologies to mitigate the shortage of water that undermines the development of agroforestry and help communities and ecosystems in northern Tocantins adapt to the effects of climate change. It will also work to generate income from nontimber forest products and diversify the food supply. This project should benefit 500 farmers directly and 5,000 other Brazilians indirectly.

Cooperativa de Trabalho, Prestação de Serviços, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (COOPTER) will work with communities in Araguacema and Couto de Magalhães, state of Tocantins, to draft and formalize agreements regulating fishing in the lakes along the Araguaia River, as well as develop plans for and to improve processing managing stocks of pirarucu (arapaima gigs). The income generated and the more reliable food supply developed will benefit 245 fishers directly and 980 other area residents indirectly.

Agência de Desenvolvimento Econômico Local (ADEL) will train 160 youths in the skills necessary to become rural entrepreneurs and will give them access to microcredit and information technologies to help launch businesses, which might provide an incentive for them to remain in their rural communities in the semiarid region of the state of Ceará. Another 3,600 residents should benefit from the project indirectly.

Centro de Capacitação Zumbi dos Palmares (CCZP) will help beekeepers resettled in the semiarid region of Alagoas pursuant to Brazil’s program of land reform transform subsistence honey production into a viable source of income by developing a processing facility and marketing strategies. The project will benefit 120 rural families directly and 1,500 other area residents indirectly.

Centro de Documentação Eloy Ferreira da Silva (CEDEFES) will conduct research into the collaborative practices of women who engage in agriculture and craftsmaking in 20 quilombola communities in two regions in the state of Minas Gerais. The resulting analysis is expected to help 100 women organize better so they increase their income. Another 400 quilombola residents should benefit indirectly.

Cooperativa de Produtores Orgânicos e Biodinâmicos da Chapada Diamantina (Cooperbio) will work with its members to improve the organic production and agroecological practices of its smallholder farmers in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, Brazil. The activities will focus on production, processing and marketing of specialty coffees and increasing crop diversity with local fruit trees. This project will benefit directly 260 people, and indirectly 2,000 people.

Centro de Agricultura Alternativa do Norte de Minas (CAANM) will assist smallholder farmers and indigenous communities to improve agroecological production, processing and marketing of fruits and sugarcane in the semi-arid region of Northern Minas Gerais. Project activities also include the development of a participatory certification system and the opening of new markets for agroecological products in the region. The project will benefit about 240 families directly and 1,000 other families indirectly.

Associação para Desenvolvimento Local Co-produzido (ADELCO) will work with Pitaguary and Tremembé associations to reduce dependence on government assistance by developing cultural tourism as a source of revenue and to improve sanitation, water infrastructure, health and household income in these indigenous communities in Ceará. This project will benefit 1,000 Pitaguary and Tremembé Brazilians directly and another 7,700 indirectly.

Comunidade Organizada para Preservação e Recuperação do Meio Ambiente (COPEMA) will develop a network of community gardens on uncultivated public- and privately- owned land on the southwest periphery of Granja Portugal, a district in Fortaleza, with the immediate goals of assuring a more reliable food supply and improving nutrition and health. The gardens are also expected to generate jobs and additional income, especially for unemployed women, and to improve the urban environment. Some 240 residents should benefit directly and another 1,000 indirectly.

Comissão Pastoral da Terra do Rio Grande do Norte (CPT-RN) will work with community associations to introduce low-cost infrastructure for farming with limited water resources in 10 settlements formed pursuant to Brazil’s program of land reform in western Rio Grande do Norte. The infrastructure will benefit 500 farmers and 2,515 members of their families.

Centro de Educação e Organização Popular (CEOP) will work with two rural communities in the semiarid region of Paraíba to improve agricultural production. The goal is to train farmers, especially women and youths, in agroecological techniques for the management of their family plots, with special focus on improving soil fertility and planting native trees species. Project activities will contribute to diversification of production, food security and income generation. This project will benefit 100 residents directly and 2,000 indirectly.

Associação dos Moradores, Agricultores e Apicultores da Lapinha (Amalapinha) will improve agroforestry, expand processing and marketing and develop community tourism as a means for income generation and environmental conservation in Morro do Pilar, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This project will benefit 150 people directly and 500 indirectly.

Associação dos Maricultores da Ilha Rasa (AMAIR) will work with local fishers in Ilha Rasa to reduce illegal extraction and promote replenishment of native oyster stocks in the bay of Guaraqueçaba in Paraná State. The project will also increase fishers’ income and the sustainable management of estuarine resources. This project includes development of oyster cultivation areas and training in processing and marketing. This project will benefit 30 people directly and about 400 residents indirectly.

Serra Acima – Associação de Cultura e Educação Ambiental (SerrAcima) will work with smallholder farmers, particularly women and young people, in the Paraíba River valley in São Paulo state to improve their living conditions and resilience to extreme weather. It will work with the farmers to implement agroecological practices and sell excess produce to local markets, school lunch programs, and tap into expanded markets in nearby tourist destinations. The project will directly benefit 320 people and 960 people indirectly.
