Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), formerly recognized as Indian Photo-Interpretation Institute (IPI), was establish in 1966 under the auspices of the Survey of India to render comprehensive training with hands on experience of the issuing technology. The success of satellite remote sensing in early 70’s produced a require for manpower controlled in the utilization of remote sensing technology, and therefore, Institute was mixed with National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) in July 1976. Late 70’s and early 80’s saw the emergence of remote sensing as a effective tool for natural resources survey and direction and in the year 1980, NRSA came under the defense of Department of Space (Government of India), which is the nodal agency for the growth and application of space technology and science for the socio-economic benefit of the nation. IIRS trains people and formulate capacity among the users. It also keeps data purchase market active.
