The National Institutes of Technology (NITs), are regarded as colleges of engineering and technology education in India. The government has determined to bestow REC, Srinagar with “Deemed University” status and also appointing it as National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar. It ranks among the top universities of the nation. In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, determined to upgrade, in phases, all the original 17 sectional Engineering Colleges (RECs) as National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar is located near the famous Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar. It is close to Dal Lake which is main tourist feature of Kashmir. The institute was set out in 1960 under government’s first 5 year plan as territorial Engineering College (REC), Srinagar.
They were originally called sectional Engineering Colleges (RECs).
