NIT Srinagar is located close the famous Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar. NIT Srinagar is near to Dal Lake which is major tourist attracter of Kashmir. The NIT Srinagar was begun in the year 1960 below government’s 1st five year plan as Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. The government has decided to contribute REC, Srinagar with “regarded University” status and also naming it as NIT, Srinagar.
National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are technology and technology pointed colleges in India. They were in the first place called territorial technology Colleges (RECs). In 2002, the Ministry of Human imagination Development, Government of India, determined to upgrade, in phases, all the original 17 Regional technology Colleges (RECs) as National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
There are presently 20 NITs, the latest being NIT, Agartala and Karaikal.The Government of India has brought in the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) Act 2007 to bring 20 such institutions within the ambit of the act and to allow for them with complete liberty in their operating. The NITs are designedly scattered during the country in line with the government norm of an NIT in every major state of India to promote territorial development
