PGIMS Chandigarh, also known as Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is one of the height medical colleges of India. PGI Chandigarh came into universe in 1962. In 1967, PGI Chandigarh turned a sovereign body under the rule of Parliament and came under the authority of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute is necessitated in research for the rural and community associated environment and health problems. There has been a steady progress in developing new research methods and schemes for the benefit of patients. The center of research has been on tackling diseases like diarrhoea, tuberculosis, malaria, amoebiasis, HIV, leprosy, hepatitis, anaemia, leukaemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, thalassemia, dental caries, stone disease, cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases.
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh was proposed in 1960 as a center of excellence which would effort to formulate rules of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as potential and undertake to develop medicos in various disciplines of medicine. Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh is substantially outfitted with all the modern facilities, and provides education in a variety of disciplines at different degree levels. PGI Chandigarh is also a fellow member of the tie-up of Indian Universities (AIU). The PGIMER was also given the responsibility to extend the horizons of medical cognition by intensive research in the area of health.
