Railways were inserted in India in 1853 and as their growth advanced by to the 20th century, various company managed organizations arose. With Independence and the resultant extraordinary raise in country’s industrial and economical activity, which enhanced the require of rail transfer – a new formation called Railway Testing and Research Centre (RTRC) was establish in 1952 at Lucknow, for testing and leading imposed research for increase of railway rolling stock, permanent way etc.
Central Standards Office (CSO) and the Railway Testing and Research Centre (RTRC) were incorporated into an individual unit identified Research Designs and Standards system (RDSO) in 1957, under Ministry of Railways at Lucknow.
