The U. P. Rajarshi Tandon Open University, Allahabad, was established under Act No. 10/1999 passed by U. P. Legislature and assented to by the Governor of U.P. on March 24, 1999.

It plans to provide access to higher education for large section of population and, in particular, deprived groups like - those living in remote and rural areas including working people, homemakers and other adults who wish to upgrade or acquire knowledge through studies.

The mission of UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University is to reach the un-reached; to universalize opportunities of education; to provide opportunities of higher education to the weaker sections; to equalize opportunities in higher education; to provide quality education to one and all and to become a virtual university.
