North Bengal University was established in 1962 by an Act of the state Legislative Assembly. Its main aim is to offer training and to conduct research in different branches of studies to six districts in the area of North Bengal and to the state of Sikkim.

It offers education under graduation, diploma, post-graduation and Ph. D Programmes in the faculties of technology, arts, commerce, law and science in its own campus and also through the colleges affiliated to it and through the centres functioning under the jurisdiction of it.
