The Study of South Asia at the University of Pennsylvania has a history that extends back over a century. Eras of the nation's top researchers of South Asian writing, society, history, craftsmanship and religion have been prepared at Penn. Sanskrit was learned at Penn as ahead of schedule as the 1890s and a full time Sanskrit position was first settled in 1912 with the arrangement of Franklin Edgerton.

Penn kept on being a pioneer in the field of South Asia contemplates in the 70s, as orders outside the division (History, Politicial Science, Anthropology and English) presented positions concentrating on South Asia.
