PREAMBLE The Joint Degree (also called Joint Doctorate /Co-tutelle Doctorate) of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is awarded to a candidate who, as per these regulations, has submitted a thesis on the basis of original and independent research conducted jointly in two universities in any particular discipline or involving more than one discipline (inter-disciplinary) that makes a contribution to the advancement of knowledge, which is approved by Board of examiners as required. This joint Ph.D. program is applicable only for the Departments of University of Madras. 1.1 The Joint Doctoral degree is made possible on the basis of a contract of cooperation between the doctoral researcher, the researcher’s supervisors (one at each university) and the respective universities 1.2 The aim of the Joint Ph D program apart from recognizing the involvement of multiple supervisors and universities within India and abroad, is to permit the research candidate to have a broader even international experience that is both intellectually and culturally stimulating. 1.3 The Joint Doctoral Agreement is to be established in the case of every JOINT Ph D Candidate whether University of Madras is the Parent Institution or the Host University.
