Re: reliability and validity of the scholastic aptitude test

The SAT is arguably the single most important test for American high school students.

Every year over 2 million people take this standardized multiple choice test and most four-year colleges and universities use the results to evaluate applicants from more than 20,000 disparate U. S. High Schools.

Considering the growing importance of this test, is there any wonder there would not be continual concern about it reliability.

A conscious effort was made to develop an instrument that would measure neither school achievement nor general mental alertness.

Looking at the tremendous amount of reliance on this “National Standardized Testing” process there is no wonder how so many people question the reliability and validity of this test.

Universities using these results to evaluate applicants from more 20,000 disparate U. S. High Schools, the reliability and validity must also meet a national standard.

SAT Registration fees

If you want to take SAT test 2017 with Essay (Essay is optional), the registration cost would be US $54.50.

However, if you opt out of the Essay, your fee would be $43.

For international students taking the test outside the US, an extra $49 is added to the registration fees.

For SAT subject test, the basic registration fee is $26. Aspirants have to add $26 for language tests with listening and $18 for other tests.

SAT Exam Pattern

SAT got an overhaul recently in 2016, and you can find a comparison between the old and new SAT here.

The paper consists of 3 major sections: Writing, Mathematics and Critical Reading.

Essay remains a separate component of the test (if you choose a test with Essay), and its score does not register in the overall test score of 1600.

No penalty is awarded for incorrect responses, and all questions carry equal weight (unless specified).

Most of the test questions are multiple-choice- 4 choices given of which 1 is correct.

Section Test Duration Number of Questions
Evidence-based Reading
and Writing Reading 65 Minutes 52
Writing and Language 35 Minutes 44
Mathematics Math 25 Minutes 20
Math 55 Minutes 38
∑ 230 Minutes ∑ 154 Questions
Essay (Optional) 50 Minutes 1 Task
