It is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. BITS, Pilani has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 'A' grade with a CGPA of 3.45 on a four point scale after visiting its Pilani, K.K Birla Goa & Hyderabad campuses in 2016. Ranking Internationally, it was ranked 801-1000 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The same rankings ranked it 187 in Asia and 109 among BRICS nations. It was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018, 181-190 in Asia and 196 among BRICS & Emerging Economies 2017. In India, BITS Pilani was ranked 21 overall in 2017 by National Institutional Ranking Framework, 13 among universities and 16 among engineering colleges. It ranked 4th among engineering colleges by India Today in 2017, 5th by Outlook India and 7th by The Week. The Department of Management was ranked 16 among management schools in India by Outlook India's "Top 100 Management Schools" of 2016.
