UNIT 1 INTRODUCTION 9 Hrs.
Engineering material and their physical properties applied to design, selection of materials. Stress and strain, theory of
failures, factor of safety, endurance limit, notch sensitivity, stress concentration, Limits, Fits and Tolerances, design
considerations for interference fits, surface finish, surface roughness, Rankine’s formula - Tetmajer’s formula - Johnson
formula- design of pushrods.

UNIT 2 CYLINDER AND PISTON – MATERIALS AND DESIGN 9 Hrs.
Choice of materials of cylindrical piston, piston friction, piston slap, design of piston, piston pin (Gudgeon pin), piston ring,
piston failures, lubrication and piston assembly. Design of cylinder. Ceramic coating – Engine performance, Emission.

UNIT 3 DESIGN OF CONNECTING ROD, CRANKSHAFT 9 Hrs.
Material for connecting rod, determining minimum length of connecting rod, small end and big end design, shaft design,
design of big end cap bolts, connecting rod failures, balancing of I.C. Engines, significance of firing order, material for
crankshaft, design of crankshaft under bending and twisting, balancing weight calculations.

UNIT 3 DESIGN OF VALVES, VALVE TRAIN AND FLYWHEEL 9 Hrs.
Design aspects of intake and exhaust manifolds, inlet and Exhaust valves, valve springs, tappets, valve train. Design of cam
& camshaft, Design of rocker arm, Cam profile generation. Materials and design of flywheel.

UNIT 5 DESIGN OF TRANSMISSION SHAFTS, BEARINGS AND SPRINGS 9 Hrs.
Design of transmission shafts, materials used for bearings, classification of bearings. Viscosity of lubricants, theory of
hydrostatic and hydrodynamic lubrication, design of sliding contact bearings and design of helical springs
Max.45 Hrs.

COURSE OUTCOMES
On completion of the course, student will be able to
CO1 - Understand and implement Engineering Design process.
CO2 - Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques in the design process.
CO3 - Develop knowledge on design procedure of various engine components.
CO4 - Design the Machine Components like Shafts and Springs Gear, Design Flywheels and Bearings.
CO5 - Acquire knowledge on geometrical dimensioning.
CO6 - Acquire the knowledge about the lubrication.
