UNIT 1 BASIC SENSORS 9 Hrs.
Introduction, Difference between Sensors and Transducers, Classification, Active and Passive transducers, Characteristics ,
Basic Requirements and Selection of Sensors and Transducers, Sensor for Motion and Position Measurement, GPS, INS,
Doppler, SONAR, Thermal Sensors - Gas Thermometric Sensors, Acoustic Temperature Sensor, Thermo-EMF Sensors,
NQR Thermometry, Heat Flux Sensor.

UNIT 2 RESISTIVE AND CAPACITIVE TRANSDUCERS 9 Hrs.
Mechanical Devices as Primary Detectors-Mechanical Springs, Proving Rings, Resistive Transducers - Principle of
operation, construction details, characteristics and applications of potentiometer, strain gauge - resistance thermometer, hotwire
anemometer, piezo-resistive sensor and humidity sensor, Capacitive Transducers- Principle of operation, construction
details, characteristics of capacitive transducers – Different types & Signal Conditioning – Applications:- Capacitor
microphone, Capacitive pressure sensor, Proximity sensor.

UNIT 3 INDUCTIVE AND OTHER TRANSDUCERS 9 Hrs.
Inductive transducers: Self inductive transducers, Mutual inductive transducer, – Principle of operation, construction details,
characteristics and applications of LVDT, Induction potentiometer – Variable reluctance transducers – Synchros – Microsyn
– Piezoelectric transducer – Hall Effect transducer – Magneto elastic sensor – Digital transducers – Fiber optic sensors.

UNIT 4 SMART SENSORS 9 Hrs.
Introduction to Smart Sensors and Semiconductor sensors, MEMS, MOEMS, Nano-sensors, SQUID Sensors, Thick & Thin
Film sensors ( Bio sensor & Chemical sensor)- Environmental Monitoring sensors (Water Quality & Air Pollution)- Basics of
Fabrication- Sensor Interface Systems.

UNIT 5 DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEMS 9 Hrs.
Introduction, Objectives and Configuration of Data Acquisition System, Data Acquisition Systems, Data Loggers, problems in
signal acquisition, Signal Processing Techniques: averaging, integrating, basic filtering techniques- Introduction, Functions
of Signal Conditioning Equipment, Amplification-Types of Amplifiers-optical amplifiers, Mechanical amplifiers, Data
Conversion. Data/Signal Transmission, Telemetry.
Max.45 Hrs.

CO2 - Understand fundamental physical and technical base of sensors and Transducers.
CO3 - Explain the various types of Sensors & Transducers and their working principle.
CO4 - Understand the working of Resistive, Capacitive and Inductive transducers.
CO5 - Understand the working of smart sensors.
CO6 - Understand the concept behind data acquisition.
