It was created on December 23, 1913, with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act in response to a series of financial panics that showed the need for central control of the monetary system. There are 12 in total, 1 for each of the 12 Federal Reserve Districts that were created by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.
