The origin of the Department of Communication and Journalism was established at University of Pune in 1956

A two-year, part-time diploma course in Journalism was inducted on 5th February 1964.

The department became a full-fledged regular department of the University in 1976.

One-year Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) was introduced from the academic year 1993-94.

Academic programs-

The department offers following courses :

Master of Journalism and Mass Communication Vruttapatravidya padawika Diploma in Mass Media

Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC)

Diploma in Mass Media (Post graduate, part-time Diploma course)

Vruttapatravidya Padawika

Ph.D. (by research)

The department offers three different courses for training in journalism as well as Ph.D. programme for research in journalism and mass communication.

MJMC (Master of Journalism and Mass Communication):

The two-year (four semester) credit point based full time post graduate course covers various subjects and offers choice of various specialised subjects. It being a full time course also can offer more practical training.

Vruttapatravidya Padawika (Diploma in Journalism) -

It is a post graduate part time Diploma course which is offered only in Marathi. This self-financed course is run in collaboration with Pune Union of Working Journalists. It aims at training journalists for Marathi print media. However it also offers basic training in Broadcast and Web Journalism, as well as Advertising and Public Relations.

Diploma in Mass Media -

It is a post graduate part-time diploma course which is run in English (with an option for students to work in Marathi as well), introduces the students to all forms of media activity, with almost equal emphasis on Print, Radio, TV and Web Journalism; Advertising and public Relations. This also is a self-financed course.
