The bill was signed into law by President Bush on December 19, 2003. The Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act (SCRA) allows individuals to break a lease. The lease breaks when they go onto active duty if the lease was entered into before going on active duty. The act allows a service member to terminate a residential lease. This protection covers "lease of premises occupied, or intended to be occupied, by a service member. The termination date for a lease requires monthly rent. The earliest termination date is 30 days after the first date. They (Military members) may also terminate automobile leases. Military members making a permanent change of station (PCS) move.
