The University of Calcutta is a public state university established on 24 January 1857. It was the first institution in Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style university. In India it is recognized as a "Five-Star University" and a "Centre with Potential for Excellence" by the University Grants Commission and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Ranking Internationally, the University of Calcutta was ranked 751-780 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The QS World University Rankings ranked it 125 in Asia and 64 among BRICS nations. It was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018, 191-200 in ASIA and 179 among BRICS& Emerging Economies in 2017. In India, it was ranked 27 overall by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2017 and 16 among universities. Accreditation and Recognition • In 2001 it was awarded the status of ‘5 star university’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. • In 2005, the Indian University Grants Commission declared it as a “University with Potential for Excellence”. • The Manuscript Library at the university was designated as a Manuscript Conservation Centre under the National Mission for Manuscripts, which was established in 2003. • In 2010, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded its highest grade of 'A' to the university.
