The Department of Chemistry was begun in 1908. Educator F L Usher, an understudy of Sir, William Ramsay of England was designated as the primary Professor of the Department in 1910. The division was partnered to the University of Madras until 1916. It accomplished the status of a University office after the foundation of University of Mysore. It went under the regulatory control of Bangalore University in the year 1964. Since its beginning the division had specializations in the territories of Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry.

Since its initiation the department had specializations in the ranges of Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. Natural chemistry was presented in 1973 and Analytical Chemistry specialization as of late as 2006.

The advancement of the division amid the previous century is because of the endeavors of cosmic system of instructors that incorporate Prof. M. Shadaksharaswamy, Prof. T H Venkata Setty, Prof. G K Narayana Reddy and Prof. K M Sivanandaiah.

The leads and impulse gave by these prominent researchers have prompted blooming of research in present day zones of Chemistry. Energized by the past eminence, the office is endeavoring hard to make a specialty for itself in national and worldwide spaces of research and educating.

E. Eligibility: An aspirant must have secured 40% marks in the aggregate and studied Chemistry (cognate subject) securing 50% marks in this subject at the B.Sc level as well as studied Mathematics at 10 + 2 or Pre - University level.
